Should the unthinkable happen and World War 3 breaks out, could you imagine Michigan's Lower and Upper Peninsulas landing on opposite sides of the conflict? That's the scenario envisioned by the video game Conflict of Nations: World War 3.

At least that's a screen shot that is being used to promote the game to Facebook users. Conflict of Nations: World War 3 is, according to a game wiki,

a military-themed strategy game set in the late 20th and early 21st century, featuring contemporary battlefield technology, terrorist insurgencies, and weapons of mass destruction.

So the game grows and evolves with play and your experience wouldn't necessarily put a Korea-style DMZ at the Straits of Mackinac.

But could the two peninsulas ever truly end up as adversaries? The UP has long dreamed of a 51st State for themselves. Superior statehood is a concept that goes back to the days of Thomas Jefferson, who called the region Sylvania.

An 1858 convention in Ontonagon was the most serious the subject ever got. There has been no serious effort at statehood for Superior since the 1960s.

The Conflict of Nations game asks you to choose a "doctrine" of three that resemble American democracy, European Union multi-nationalism and Chinese communism. If you want to give the game a try, it's browser-based and can be found here.
