A Michigan State Trooper and Calhoun County Sheriff’s Deputy exchanged gunfire with a home invasion suspect, Saturday night, in Pennfield Township.

A 45 year-old Battle Creek woman had called 911, around 11:51 PM, saying that someone was breaking into her home, located in the 14000 block of J Drive North in Marshall Township. During the break-in, the suspect fired one gunshot while in the home. The intruder was identified as the woman’s ex-boyfriend, a 47 year-old man from Battle Creek.

The man fled the home, with two guns, and was located minutes later by authorities on Emmet Street near Maxwell in Pennfield Township. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle as it lead them on a short pursuit. The vehicle was eventually stopped at the intersection of Vanburen and Elm, where the suspect exited and began firing multiple rounds towards the officers, striking their patrol cars. The deputy and trooper returned fire, striking the gunman who collapsed onto the pavement. The suspect was taken to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo and is listed in stable condition.

The officers escaped injury in the shoot-out and the Officer Involved Shooting is being investigated by the Michigan State Police. The Home Invasion is being investigated by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
